Wideband E-shaped Patch Antennas for Advanced Wireless Terminals

Low-profile patch antennas have become ubiquitous in wireless terminals, especially as devices smaller and demand more functionality out of their RF subsystems. While shape size is attactive for many applications, narrow bandwidth hinders usage systems. With the rise computer-aided design, antenna design concepts been presented with enhanced capabilities. The E-shaped antenna, whose original early 2000’s resembles letter E, offers compelling performance reasonable manufacturing complexity. In it most basic form, this was linearly polarized either wideband or dual-band. Over last two decades, variations literature: circularly polarized, miniaturized, frequency reconfigurable, even polarization reconfigurable. This paper summarizes these efforts realizing novel functionalities a relatively simple geometry.
